The following is a guest post by Andrea Walters.
For any business today, whether big or small, it is so imperative to have an online presence, just to connect with customers. It is the very first thing a business should consider investing in ? a good, useful website and an updated online communication link.
It is the first step of internet marketing, and a relatively cheap one ? you don?t need to invest thousands of dollars to get a website made. And yet not many small and developing businesses venture have their presence online ? and you can hardly blame them ? it is so competitive and while investment may be low, small marketers wonder if there is anything to be gained by swimming in an ocean along with other websites, by becoming one of them, to be lost in obscurity. In fact, the logic most consider is that they are content to remain offline and work though other tools ? which may even be more expensive ? simply because at the very least they know the competitors they are dealing with, and how they can respond.
But being online, whether through a website or through advertising is a lot more about identity than it is about anything else. The increase in revenue will follow on its own, because having a professionally designed web space means that the business is professional enough and works on the lines of modern world, that it moves in pace with the technology and changing patterns of communication. Any business ?ESPECIALLY a small or developing one ? needs to take itself seriously in order to convey that message across.
And then of course there is branding. Your business may have a logo that people might recognize with ? and flashing that logo over public platforms like blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites is a great way to be noted. Even if people whom you attract do not need your services now, at a future date when they do, they will remember the logo and probably come to you inadvertently. Online branding can go a far way in attracting customers considering that nearly everyone these days is online all the time, either through their phones, tablet or computers.
Search engines will also pick up your business once you are online. Of course, you will have to work on optimizing your website, and that can be a lengthy and time consuming process which requires the help of experts ? something expensive which not all small business can afford. But it is something that must definitely be kept in mind for a future date as revenues and internet traffic increase tremendously with SEOs.
The point for small businesses really burns down to how much they are willing to spend on advertising. But online advertising should be considered even before other traditional forms of advertising ? simply because everything is moving base to the web sphere. It is universal, cheap, free and fast for users ? and for the marketer himself, money is invested for a professional designer and optimizer. Most small businesses who have tried internet marketing successfully seem to think this is money well spent.
