(AP) ? The reaction to the deadly Connecticut school shooting can be seen at gun stores and self-defense retailers across the nation, with anxious parents buying armored backpacks for children and firearms enthusiasts stocking up on assault weapons in anticipation of tighter gun control measures.

A spike in gun sales is common after a mass shooting, but the latest rampage has generated record sales in some states, particularly of rifles similar to the AR-15 the gunman used in an attack Friday on Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 26 people, including 20 children.

Colorado set a single-day record for gun background check requests the day after the shootings, while Nevada saw more checks in the two days that followed than any other weekend this year. Records were also set in Tennessee, California and Virginia, among others.

Some gun shop owners stopped selling their remaining stock of military-style rifles, anticipating only more interest and value after President Barack Obama on Wednesday instructed his administration to create concrete proposals to reduce gun violence.

Robert Akers, a Rapid City, S.D., gun seller who specializes in such rifles, said the rush of customers had transformed his Rapid Fire Firearms store into a "madhouse" and that he's not actively selling the guns and has turned off his phone.

"The price is only going to go up higher," he said.

There was also an unusual increase in sales for armored backpacks designed to shield children caught in shootings, according to three companies that make them.

The armor inserts fit into the back panel of a child's backpack, and sell for up to $400, depending on the retailer. The armor is designed to stop bullets from handguns, not assault weapons like the one used in the shooting at the Newtown, Conn., school.

Still, the manufacturers and some parents say that while they don't guarantee children won't be killed, they could still be used as shields.

Ken Larson, 41, of Denver, Colo., already had an armored backpack for himself and persuaded his wife to buy one for their 1-year-old after the latest shootings. He knows the backpack won't guarantee his son's safety. But, he added, it was a worthy precaution.

"It's a no brainer. My son's life is invaluable," Larson said. "If I can get him a backpack for $200 that makes him safer, I don't even have to think about that."

Some experts, however, say sending children to school in armored backpacks is not a healthy response to fear about mass shootings. Anne Marie Albano, psychiatry director at Columbia University's Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders, said parents should convey calmness, not anxiety.

"This is not serving to keep children safe," she said. "This is serving to increase their fear and their suspicion of their peers."

At Amendment II in Salt Lake City, sales of its children's backpacks and armored inserts have increased, with 200 purchase requests Wednesday alone.

"The incident last week highlights the need to protect our children," said co-owner Derek Williams. "We didn't get in this business to do this. But the fact is that our armor can help children just as it can help soldiers."

Kerry Clark, president of Texas-based Backpackshield.com, began making the backpacks after the deadly mass shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007. Clark said he sold 15 backpacks Wednesday. Prior to Friday's shooting, he said, the company would sometimes go an entire month and just sell one.

"It's the busiest I've seen it in my life," he said.

Bullet Blocker, a Massachusetts-based company that sells the backpack armor, declined to provide sales numbers but noted that recent sales were substantially more than normal.

Sales of assault weapons also were on the rise.

Austin Cook, general manager of Hoover Tactical Firearms in suburban Birmingham, Ala., said the spike in sales since Friday's shootings has been so intense that federal background checks that typically take five minutes or less are now taking up to an hour.

Cook said about 50 people were waiting in line for his store to open the morning after the shootings, and that he's since sold nearly all of his assault weapons. Now, he's trying to find more distributors.

"I can't keep them in the store," Cook said.

In Pittsburgh, Dick's Sporting Goods said it was suspending sales of modern rifles nationwide because of the shooting. The company also said it's removing all guns from display at its store closest to Newtown.

Aaron Byrd, co-owner of Patriot Shooting Sports in Youngsville, N.C., is sold out of the AR-15 rifles, ammo for those types of guns and high-capacity magazines.

"Things have been crazy the past couple of days. A lot of people have been coming in looking to purchase semiautomatic rifles. They're worried that the government's going to ban semiautomatic rifles and high-capacity magazines, so they've been coming in looking for those," he said.

He added, "I think it is a knee-jerk reaction by both parties ? both the government and the citizens."

Changes to the rules regarding free agency and the salary cap often have unintended consequences.? The mere existence of a team-by-team spending limit, which was adopted 20 years ago as players finally achieved their long-coveted ability to move from team to team when their contracts expired, prompted some teams to part ways with a player who never wanted to leave.

More recently, the agreement to allow teams to instantly and easily carry excess cap space from one year to the next has removed a team?s incentive to use it or lose it by signing players to in-season contract extensions.

It?s a concept explained by Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette within the context of the Packers.? No new contracts were given to players after September 2011, and $5.28 million in remaining cap space was pushed to 2012.

This year, the Packers have $7 million left.? In seasons before 2011, the goal would have been to spend it ? or at a minimum to use one of the handful of tactics that would nudge all or part it to the next season, by for example the use of a ?likely to be earned? incentive that, as a practical matter, never would have been earned.? The money for the phony incentive hit the cap in the current year, and a refund was applied the next season.

The end result?? Cap space was pushed from one year to the next.

The union balked at restructured contracts aimed primarily at deferring cap space to future years, insisting that the money be spent sooner rather than later.? Now, with teams able to just push the cap space forward, there?s no reason to give raises in the latter days of a given season.

After all, a player signed to a new, long-term contract in December could tear an ACL or pop an Achilles tendon in the remaining weeks of the season.? By taking away the cap incentive to pay the players now, teams will be more inclined to simply wait until the player emerges from the current year unscathed.

Neutralizing, to an extent, the don?t-pay-it-forward mentality is the arrival in 2013 of a per-team spending minimum.? Starting next year, each franchise must actually spend at least 89 percent of the unadjusted cap, on a rolling three-year average.

Still, that allows 11 percent, on average, to not be spent and in turn to be carried over.? In theory, teams could stockpile unlimited millions on a year-to-year basis, creating a rainy-day fund that could be used to load up the roster for a Super Bowl run or, possibly, never used at all.

Some franchises may be inclined to stop carrying the excess 11 percent to future cap years.? Indeed, at some point, the accumulation of annual excesses of more than $13 million (based on the current cap level) will shift from conspicuous to embarrassing.

For now, the lack of in-season contract extensions will continue to be conspicuous, especially since players whose contracts are expiring are inclined to eschew the bird in the hand for a shot at two that may not be in the bush on the first day of free agency.? Meanwhile, with the pre-Bush tax rates set to return, players who may currently be turning up their noses at $10 million signing bonuses need to realize that the same number after January 1 results in another $460,000 landing in Uncle Sam?s piggy bank.

Fab nabs 'seven-figure' investment from Times of India

Fast-growing e-commerce site Fab plans to expand its focus on India after taking a "seven-figure investment" from Times Internet, the digital arm of The Times of India Group.

Financial terms were not revealed, but the investment will include a partnership between the two companies "to explore and execute on our India market strategy in the coming years," Fab founder and CEO Jason Goldberg wrote in a blog post on Bestshop.

The investment and collaboration come a little more than a month after the design-focused shopping site acquired Pune, India-based True Sparrow, a tech venture company that partnered exclusively with Fab.

Goldberg said the investment was fostered by Satyan Gajwani, Times Internet Group CEO.

"I have been working with Satyan for several months now and he been super impressive with his approach to innovating and growing technology businesses in India," he wrote. "I'm excited to work with him and his team as Fab explores the India market further."

The quirky flash-sales site made a big push to cash in on holiday traffic this year. The company launched its holiday stores shortly after reaching 9 million member sign-ups last month. And it has paid off; Fab sold more than $6.5 million worth of product in the span from Black Friday through Cyber Monday -- nearly four times the amount sold during the same period last year, the company said.

Fab has raised more than $150 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, First Round Capital, Atomico, and SoftTech VC.

Cerberus to sell gun company that makes Bushmaster

The company that makes one of the weapons used to kill elementary school children in Connecticut is being put up for sale by its owner, which called Friday's tragedy a "watershed event" in the debate over gun control.

The private-equity group Cerberus Capital Management said Tuesday it will sell its controlling stake in Freedom Group International, the maker of Bushmaster rifles. Investors also continued to bail out of other gunmakers while the retailer Dick's Sporting Goods said it would stop selling military-style rifles.

The activity comes as the political winds appear to be shifting. Some Republicans now say they're willing to discuss the issue of gun control ? along with mental health issues and violent video games,

Cerberus cobbled Freedom Group together by buying Bushmaster, Remington, and other well-known gun brands starting in 2006. On Friday, a gunman using what is believed to have been a Bushmaster military-style rifle killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S history.

"It is apparent that the Sandy Hook tragedy was a watershed event that has raised the national debate on gun control to an unprecedented level," Cerberus wrote in announcing the planned sale. Cerberus owned 95 percent of Freedom Group, according to a year-end 2011 filing for the gunmaker on its website.

Freedom Group said it's the largest firearms manufacturer in the U.S. It sold 1.1 million rifles and shotguns last year, along with 2 billion rounds of ammunition. Its products are sold to law enforcement and military customers, as well as retailers who sell them to hunters and gun enthusiasts.

The so-called Assault Weapons Ban that expired in 2004 restricted the sale of some types of guns like those made by Bushmaster. Freedom Group noted in its filing that new laws along the lines of the expired assault weapons ban "could have a material adverse effect on our business."

Cerberus attempted to distance itself from that debate on Tuesday.

"We are investors, not statesmen or policy makers," the company said in its statement. Firms like Cerberus are basically privately run pools of money that invest in companies on behalf of pension funds including those for teachers, police officers, and other institutions. "It is not our role to take positions, or attempt to shape or influence the gun control policy debate. That is the job of our federal and state legislators," the private-equity firm said.

The sale may have been influenced by one or more of those clients. The announcement comes one day after the California State Teachers Retirement System, a large pension fund, told The Wall Street Journal that it was reviewing its $500 million investment commitment to Cerberus because of the firm's stake in Freedom Group.

Cerberus is best known for its investment in Chrysler. It ended up walking away from that investment as the U.S. government bailed out the car company.

Money made from the Freedom Group sale will be returned to its investors, Cerberus said.

Meanwhile, Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. said in a statement that it suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of its stores. The company also removed all guns from sale and display at its store closest to Newtown.

Shares in publicly-traded gun makers were dropping for a third-straight day.

Shares of Sturm, Ruger & Co. dropped $3.74, or 8.5 percent, to $40.26 in afternoon trading Tuesday. They're down more than 10 percent since Thursday, the day before the shooting. Shares of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. fell 11 percent to $7.70, and are down 19.3 percent from their Thursday close.

Outdoor goods retailer Cabela's Inc. fell $1.58, or 3.8 percent, to $39.63.

A Cerberus spokesman did not return a phone message left on Tuesday. A representative for Freedom Group could not be immediately reached for comment.

Lin leads Rockets' rout in return to New York

NEW YORK (AP) ? His old fans booed him. His old friend clobbered him.

Otherwise, it was Linsanity all over again at Madison Square Garden.

Jeremy Lin had 22 points and eight assists in his return to New York, leading the Houston Rockets to a 109-96 victory Monday night that ended the Knicks' 10-game home winning streak to open the season.

Cheered then jeered, and later floored by Tyson Chandler's flagrant foul, Lin added another masterpiece to the ones he put together last season during the height of his memorable run. No longer the fan favorite he was when wearing the home uniform, Lin got a mixed reception when he left the game with 2:25 remaining and the Rockets leading by 16.

"It was a lot of fun playing out there and I think our team, we took a step in the right direction," Lin said. "And for me, it was great to be back and it was a lot of fun to play on that court again."

James Harden had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who blew out the Knicks for the second time this season. They have won the last seven meetings, including a 131-103 rout in Houston on Nov. 23.

Rookie Chris Copeland scored a career-high 29 points for the Knicks, who played without leading scorer Carmelo Anthony and had their four-game winning streak snapped. They fell to 18-6, matching the record they finished last season with under Mike Woodson.

Woodson's team decided not to match Houston's contract offer to Lin, and nobody could argue when Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and Pablo Prigioni led the Knicks to the best record in the Eastern Conference with a team that led the NBA in fewest turnovers.

But Lin was the best point guard on the floor, just as he so often was during his dazzling run last winter, when the NBA's first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent went from undrafted benchwarmer to the biggest story in basketball.

"He had a good game, without a doubt," Felton said. "I never talked junk about Jeremy Lin. Anything I said about Jeremy, I felt like he deserved anything. He deserved everything he got. He had a good game. Plain and simple."

Felton scored 14 points but shot 7 of 18. Kidd was 2 for 9, and both committed three turnovers.

The Rockets outscored the Knicks 54-29 over the middle two quarters, denying New York its first 11-0 start at home since the 1991-92 season.

The Knicks trailed by just five midway through the third quarter before the Rockets blew it open with a 15-0 run, with Lin either scoring or assisting on five of their six baskets.

His layup opened the run, and he then found Marcus Morris for a layup and a 3-pointer for a 67-55 Houston lead. Lin assisted on the second of Harden's consecutive 3-pointers, then had a steal and layup that gave Houston a 75-55 cushion.

Lin saw some fans wearing his old jersey, but said he didn't let his mind drift back to last season during the game.

"I've moved on, they've moved on," he said. "We have good memories, but at the same time we're all in a different place now."

Lin doubled his scoring average in what he called an up-and-down season so far.

"I hope this is the start of a nice run for him, because he works really hard," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "He's a great kid. He deserves it."

Anthony decided Monday to give his sprained left ankle a second straight game to recover. The Knicks did get good injury news when Amare Stoudemire, out all season after left knee surgery, was cleared to practice. He will work out with Erie, the Knicks' NBA Development League affiliate, when it works out at the Knicks' training facility on Tuesday.

The Rockets snapped a seven-game road losing streak, their longest since an eight-game skid in 2001-02.

A sellout crowd that included swimsuit model Kate Upton ? who was on one fewer Sports Illustrated covers than Lin last February ? gave the Harvard graduate a loud ovation during the introduction of starting lineups. The cheers quickly turned to jeers once the game started, particularly when he made a basket. There were boos when Chandler knocked him to the ground with a shot to the head that resulted in a flagrant foul.

Chandler felt it was a clean, hard foul that didn't warrant a flagrant. He and Lin hugged after the game.

"He had a good game," Chandler said. "He had a good game the other night. He's a good player. He's going to have some nights, but I thought we could have took away a lot of his easy baskets, him and James Harden."

J.R. Smith came off the bench to make all five shots and give the Knicks a 31-29 after one. The Rockets scored the first 10 of the second quarter, opening a 39-31 lead on Lin's 3-pointer with 9:26 left in the half. Houston scored the final six of the half, turning an eight-point lead into a 56-42 cushion.

NOTES: Stoudemire is working out with the D-League team because the Knicks are not expected to do much running at practice Tuesday. They haven't held a formal practice since Dec. 4. "It seems strange but we have a stretch right now where we're playing every other day and it's hard to play a game and then think you can come in and drill these guys," Woodson said. "I like to practice, that's where I feel like you learn a lot and stay sharp in terms of your defensive rotations, but I can't run them in practice and expect them to come back and play the next day and then practice again. There's just too many games coming at us right now."

Hawaii's Inouye, senator and war hero, dies at 88

HONOLULU (AP) ? On Dec. 7, 1941, high school senior Daniel Inouye knew he and other Japanese-Americans would face trouble when he saw Japanese dive bombers, torpedo planes and fighters on their way to bomb Pearl Harbor and other Oahu military bases.

He and other Japanese-Americans had wanted desperately to be accepted, he said, and that meant going to war.

"I felt that there was a need for us to demonstrate that we're just as good as anybody else," Inouye, who eventually went on to serve 50 years as a U.S. senator from Hawaii, once said. "The price was bloody and expensive, but I felt we succeeded."

Inouye, 88, died Monday of respiratory complications at a Washington-area hospital. As a senator, he became one of the most influential politicians in the country, playing key roles in congressional investigations of the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals. He was the longest serving current senator and by far the most important for his home state of Hawaii.

"Tonight, our country has lost a true American hero with the passing of Sen. Daniel Inouye," President Barack Obama said in a statement Monday. "It was his incredible bravery during World War II ? including one heroic effort that cost him his arm but earned him the Medal of Honor ? that made Danny not just a colleague and a mentor, but someone revered by all of us lucky enough to know him."

Inouye turned toward life as a politician after his dreams of becoming a surgeon became impossible in World War II. He lost his right arm in a firefight with Germans in Italy in 1945.

Inouye's platoon came under fire and Inouye was shot in the stomach as he tried to draw a grenade. He didn't stop, crawling up a hillside, taking out two machine gun emplacements and grabbing a grenade to throw at a third.

That's when an enemy rifle grenade exploded near his right elbow, shot by a German roughly 10 yards away.

He searched for the grenade, then found it clenched in his right hand, his arm shredded and dangling from his body.

"The fingers somehow froze over the grenade, so I just had to pry it out," Inouye said in recounting the moment in the 2004 book "Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Heroes in Their Own Words" by Larry Smith.

"When I pulled it out, the lever snapped open and I knew I had five seconds, so I flipped it into the German's face as he was trying to reload," he said. "And it hit the target."

In 2000, when then-President Bill Clinton belatedly presented Inouye and 21 other Asian-American World War II veterans with the Medal of Honor, Clinton recounted that Inouye's father believed their family owed an unrepayable debt to America.

"If I may say so, sir, more than a half century later, America owes an unrepayable debt to you and your colleagues," Clinton said.

Inouye became a senator in January 1963. As president pro tempore of the Senate, he was third in the line of presidential succession. He broke racial barriers on Capitol Hill as the first Japanese-American to serve in Congress.

Less than an hour after Inouye's passing, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Inouye's death to a stunned chamber. "Our friend Daniel Inouye has died," Reid said somberly. Shocked members of the Senate stood in the aisles or slumped in their chairs.

He was elected to the House in 1959, the year Hawaii became a state. He won election to the Senate three years later and served there longer than anyone in American history except Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who died in 2010 after 51 years in the Senate.

Inouye died after a relatively brief hospitalization. Once a regular smoker, he had a portion of a lung removed in the 1960s after a misdiagnosis for cancer. Just last week, he issued a statement expressing optimism about his recovery.

Despite his age and illness, Inouye's death shocked members of the Senate.

"I'm too broken up," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who becomes president pro tem of the Senate. Leahy also is poised to take over the Senate Appropriations Committee, which Inouye helmed since 2009.

"He was the kind of man, in short, that America has always been grateful to have, especially in her darkest hours, men who lead by example and who expect nothing in return," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie will appoint a replacement, choosing from a list of three candidates selected by the state Democratic Party. "We're preparing to say goodbye," Abercrombie said. "Everything else will take place in good time."

Inouye sent a letter to Abercrombie before he died, urging Abercrombie to appoint U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa to his Senate seat.

Abercrombie met with the chairman of the state party on Monday afternoon, and the party leader said afterward that he hoped to have a replacement in office by the first day of the January session.

Whomever Abercrombie appoints would serve until a special election in 2014. The special election winner will serve until the end of Inouye's original term in 2016.

If Hanabusa is selected, a special election would be held to fill her House seat representing urban Honolulu.

Inouye was handily re-elected to a ninth term in 2010 with 75 percent of the vote.

His last utterance, his office said, was "Aloha."

Inouye spent most of his Senate career attending to Hawaii. At the height of his power, Inouye routinely secured tens of millions of dollars annually for the state's roads, schools, national lands and military bases.

Although tremendously popular in his home state, Inouye actively avoided the national spotlight until he was thrust into it. He was the keynote speaker at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and later reluctantly joined the Senate's select committee on the Watergate scandal. The panel's investigation led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

Inouye also served as chairman of the committee that investigated the Iran-Contra arms and money affair, which rocked Ronald Reagan's presidency.

A quiet but powerful lawmaker, Inouye ran for Senate majority leader several times without success. He gained power as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and chairman of the defense appropriations subcommittee before Republicans took control of the Senate in 1994.

When the Democrats regained control in the 2006 elections, Inouye became chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee. He left that post two years later to become chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.

Inouye also chaired the Senate Indian Affairs Committee for many years. He was made an honorary member of the Navajo nation and given the name "The Leader Who Has Returned With a Plan."

He is the last remaining member of the Senate to have voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Inouye was serving as Hawaii's first congressman in 1962, when he ran for the Senate and won 70 percent of the vote.

In 1968, President Lyndon Johnson urged Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who had won the Democratic nomination for president, to select Inouye as his running mate. Johnson told Humphrey that Inouye's World War II injuries would silence Humphrey's critics on the Vietnam War.

"He answers Vietnam with that empty sleeve. He answers your problems with (Republican presidential candidate Richard) Nixon with that empty sleeve," Johnson said.

But Inouye was not interested.

"He was content in his position as a U.S. senator representing Hawaii," Jennifer Sabas, Inouye's Hawaii chief of staff, said in 2008.

In one of the most memorable exchanges of the Watergate proceedings, an attorney for two of Nixon's closest advisers referred to Inouye as a "little Jap."

The attorney, John J. Wilson, later apologized. Inouye accepted the apology, noting that the slur came after he had muttered "what a liar" into a microphone that he thought had been turned off following Ehrlichman's testimony.

Inouye was born Sept. 7, 1924, to immigrant parents in Honolulu. After the Pearl Harbor bombings changed the course of his life, he volunteered for the Army at 18 and was assigned to the famed Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The team earned the nickname "Go For Broke." Inouye rose to the rank of captain and earned the Distinguished Service Cross and Bronze Star.

His military unit became the most highly decorated ever for its size and length of service.

Unlike the families of many of his comrades in arms, Inouye's wasn't subjected to the trauma and indignity of being sent by the U.S. government during the war to internment camps for Japanese Americans.

"It was the ultimate of patriotism," Inouye said at a 442nd reunion. "These men, who came from behind barbed wire internment camps where the Japanese-Americans were held, to volunteer to fight and give their lives. ... We knew we were expendable."

Inouye spent the next 20 months after losing his right arm in military hospitals. During his convalescence, Inouye met Bob Dole, the future majority leader of the Senate and 1996 Republican presidential candidate, who also was recovering from severe war injuries.

"With Sen. Inouye, what you saw is what you got and what you got was just a wonderful human being that served his country after the ill-treatment of the Japanese, lost an arm in the process," Dole said Monday. "He was the best bridge player on our floor. He did it all with one arm."

Despite his military service and honors, Inouye returned to an often-hostile America. On his way home from the war, he often recounted, he entered a San Francisco barbershop only to be told, "We don't cut Jap hair."

He returned to Hawaii and received a bachelor's degree in government and economics from the University of Hawaii in 1950. He graduated from George Washington University's law school in 1952.

Inouye proposed to Margaret Shinobu Awamura on their second date, and they married in 1949. Their only child, Daniel Jr., was born in 1964. When his wife died in 2006, Inouye said, "It was a most special blessing to have had Maggie in my life for 58 years."

He remarried in 2008, to Irene Hirano, a Los Angeles community leader.

Nokia Lumia 800 gets first taste of Windows Phone 7.8

Nokia starts pushing WP 78 to Dutch Lumia 800 users

An official Windows Phone 7.8 rollout to Nokia devices like the Lumia 510, 800 and 900 seemed all but inevitable after it popped up on third party Nokia ROM tool NaviFirm, then a couple days later on Nokia's own servers. Now, Dutch site WP7.nl is reporting that Nokia has started rolling it out in earnest to the Lumia 800, at least on that side of the pond. Provided your device is up-to-date, you may soon receive a certain "Nokia update," which will then be followed by four larger downloads. When the dust settles, you'll see a newfangled splash screen, customization options and Xbox Tile (among numerous other changes), heralding your not-completely-abandoned handset's arrival nearly into the Windows Phone 8 era. Check the translated source for more details.

How would you change Sony's Xperia U?

Image

The most exciting things in life, we are told, are measured not by the kilo, but the gram. Is that the case with Sony's Xperia U? The runt of the company's mid-year litter has an unspectacular camera, adequate internals and a middling five-hour battery life, and yet somehow, it's more than the sum of its parts. Combine that with the sheer charm of the unit, and you can't discount it as just another unexciting Sony phone. You've had nearly half a year to live cheek-by-jowl with this handset, so why not tell us what you love, what you loathe and what you'd change?

    Israeli foreign minister officially resigns

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's foreign minister has tendered his official resignation over fraud and breach of trust charges filed against him.

Avigdor Lieberman's resignation goes into effect Tuesday. He said Sunday he hopes to take "the briefest possible leave."

Lieberman announced Friday that he would resign to fight the charges, leveled a day earlier.

He remains on the slate of candidates running with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for election to parliament on Jan. 22, but his legal woes could complicate his hopes to serve as a minister in the next government.

Lieberman's Yisrael Beitenu and Netanyahu's Likud Party recently joined forces in the election, enabling the ultranationalist politician to position himself as Netanyahu's heir.

The list is expected to lead a new government, despite Lieberman's troubles. But coalition-building negotiations would likely be complicated.

Developing power sources for flexible, stretchable electronics

Dec. 14, 2012 ? Electronic devices become smaller, lighter, faster and more powerful with each passing year. Currently, however, electronics such as cell phones, tablets, laptops, etc., are rigid. But what if they could be made bendable or stretchy?

According to the University of Delaware's Bingqing Wei, stretchable electronics are the future of mobile electronics, leading giants such as IBM, Sony and Nokia to incorporate the technology into their products.

Beyond traditional electronics, potential stretchable applications include biomedical, wearable, portable and sensory devices, such as cyber skin for robotic devices and implantable electronics.

"Advances in soft and stretchable substrates and elastomeric materials have given rise to an entirely new field," says Wei, a mechanical engineering professor at UD.

But even if scientists can engineer stretchable electronics -- what about their energy source?

"Rechargeable and stretchable energy storage devices, also known as supercapacitors, are urgently needed to complement advances currently being made in flexible electronics," explains Wei.

Wei's research group at the University is making significant progress in developing scalable, stretchable power sources for this type of application using carbon nanotube macrofilms, polyurethane membranes and organic electrolytes.

This, he says, requires new thinking about materials processing and device manufacturing to maximize energy storage without compromising energy resources.

To reveal a stretchable supercapacitator's true performance, the Wei group examined the system's electrochemical behavior using buckled single-wall nanotube (SWNT) electrodes and an elastomeric separator.

According to Wei, the supercapacitor developed in his lab achieved excellent stability in testing and the results will provide important guidelines for future design and testing of this leading-edge energy storage device.

As they work to refine the technology, Wei has filed a provisional patent to protect his team's research. The work was recently published in Nano Letters, a journal of the American Chemical Society.

AP source: Tigers and Sanchez agree to 5-year deal

DETROIT (AP) ? The Detroit Tigers have made another major move to help their quest to win a World Series for the first time since 1984.

Right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez agreed to an $80 million, five-year contract with the Tigers, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Friday. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement hasn't been finalized, said Sanchez is scheduled for a physical Monday.

Sanchez was a part of Detroit's four-man rotation that led the franchise to World Series this year. He had a 1.77 ERA in 20 1-3 innings over three postseason starts, but was 1-2 because Detroit was shut out in each of his losses.

"He was big for us in the playoffs, I just wish we scored a couple more runs for him and for our team," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "He's a big-time pitcher."

The Tigers acquired the 28-year-old Venezuelan in July from Miami along with second baseman Omar Infante for right-hander Jacob Turner and two minor leaguers. As a free agent he also was pursued by the Chicago Cubs.

Sanchez got off to a shaky start with the Tigers, but improved toward the end of the regular season and finished 4-6 with a 3.74 ERA for Detroit. He is 48-51 with a 3.75 ERA since making his major league debut with the Marlins in 2006.

Justin Verlander leads Detroit's rotation, which also includes Max Scherzer, Doug Fister and Sanchez. The Tigers pitched well in the playoffs, but their bats let the team down when San Francisco swept them in the World Series. Detroit was shut out twice, scored just three runs in the two other games and had the third-lowest batting average in Series history at .159.

Detroit addressed a need last month by signing outfielder Torii Hunter to a $26 million, two-year deal and this week, the franchise made sure it didn't have to find another starting pitcher..

"It's definitely big for us to know Sanchez is coming back," Avila said. "He makes us better and makes our rotation really deep."

U.N. Internet Conference Ends Divided As U.S. And Allies Refuse ...

A contentious and controversial United Nations telecom summit, the World Conference on International Telecommunications 2012 (WCIT-12), which took place in Dubai over the past two weeks, concluded on Thursday evening with a new series of agreements on the Internet, signed by 89 nations, but which the U.S. and some 54 other countries declined to sign (refused or deferred to consult with their governments, according to DotNxt).

U.S. Ambassador Terry Kramer, one of the leaders of the U.S. delegation, opposed the new agreements, which call upon nations to ?ensure the security? of telecommunications and fight ?unsolicited bulk electronic communications,? a.k.a. spam. There is also a non-binding resolution that says nations should ?foster an enabling environment for the greater growth of the Internet,? but which also states ?all governments should have an equal role and responsibility for international Internet governance and for ensuring the stability, security and continuity of the existing Internet and its future development and of the future internet.?

The U.S. and two major allies ? the United Kingdom and Canada ? opposed the inclusion of the Internet itself as a new area of international governance, fearing such language could be used to impose censorship and restrict or disrupt the current flow of information.

?It?s with a heavy heart and a sense of missed opportunities that the U.S. must communicate that it?s not able to sign the agreement in the current form,? Kramer said, according to the BBC .

The U.S. and allies support the current way the Internet is managed, through a series of non-governmental international associations such as the World Wide Web Consoritum (W3C), which is primarily hosted in the U.S., Japan and France, and the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a Los Angeles based organization that has a U.S. government contract, as the New York Times noted.

Kramer later told Bloomberg that the U.S. delegation members ?feel there have been a bunch of proposals which have come in from the outside to hijack the conference.?

However, Kramer also tweeted the U.S. delegation?s willingness to continue discussions: ?#WCIT12 isn?t the end of dialogue on role of govts & stakeholders in growth of intl telecom & Internet sectors. Global convo will continue.?

That said, Kramer?s language on ?hijacking,? in some ways echoes earlier fears articulated by U.S. lawmakers (namely Congressional Republicans) that some governments ? Russia, China, Iran and other Arab States ? would propose new regulations giving them the authority to tax highly-trafficked websites or inspect networks for spam, which critics feared could be used as a pretext to monitor user content and communications, and impose censorship.

The new series of agreements are updates to a 1988 treaty called the International Telecommunciations Regulations, or ITRs, which the U.S. and many of the other abstaining parties previously supported. The U.S. and the nations that originally signed that treaty but objected to the new one are still bound by the previous version, which pertains mainly to international telephone calls and cable television, and not the Internet.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the U.N. telecom agency in charge of coordinating the conference, expressed dismay with the U.S. and other dissenters.

The ITU Secretary General, Hamadoun Tour?, said he was ?very much surprised,? by the outcome, according to the Associated Press, later releasing a statement arguing that the resolution attached to the new agreements was ?non-binding? and thus, should not have been cause for concern or dissent. As Tour? wrote:

?I repeat that the conference did NOT include provisions on the Internet in the treaty text. Annexed to the treaty is a non-binding Resolution which aims at fostering the development and growth of the internet - a task that ITU has contributed significantly to since the beginning of the Internet era, and a task that is central to the ITU?s mandate to connect the world, a world that today still has two thirds of its population without Internet access.?

But the fact that there were binding portions of the new agreements referring to spam and security call Tour??s claims about there being no Internet mentions into question.

The failure of the conference to reach international consensus on how the Internet should be governed, if at all, is likely to come as a tremendous relief to Western advocacy groups and major tech companies including Google and Mozilla, all of whom vocally opposed the conference.

The ITU blamed the vocal opposition in part for scuttling the conference.

?Perhaps the absence of a misinformation campaign would have helped,? ITU spokesperson Paul Conneally told TPM. ?This treaty was never about internet governance, or freedom of expression, yet the campaign against it started before even a single proposal was submitted.?
