Predatory fungi are listening for worms, then devouring prey

Dec. 13, 2012 ? For over 25 years, Paul Sternberg has been studying worms -- how they develop, why they sleep, and, more recently, how they communicate. Now, he has flipped the script a bit by taking a closer look at how predatory fungi may be tapping into worm conversations to gain clues about their whereabouts.

Nematodes, Sternberg's primary worm interest, are found in nearly every corner of the world and are one of the most abundant animals on the planet. Unsurprisingly, they have natural enemies, including numerous types of carnivorous fungi that build traps to catch their prey. Curious to see how nematophagous fungi might sense that a meal is present without the sensory organs -- like eyes or noses -- that most predators use, Sternberg and Yen-Ping Hsueh, a postdoctoral scholar in biology at Caltech, started with a familiar tool: ascarosides. These are the chemical cues that nematodes use to "talk" to one another.

"If we think about it from an evolutionary perspective, whatever the worms are making that can be sensed by the nematophagous fungi must be very important to the worm -- otherwise, it's not worth the risk," explains Hsueh. "I thought that ascarosides perfectly fit this hypothesis."

In order to test their idea, the team first evaluated whether different ascarosides caused one of the most common nematode-trapping fungi species to start making a trap. Indeed, it responded by building sticky, web-like nets called adhesive networks, but only when it was nutrient-deprived. It takes a lot of energy for the fungi to build a trap, so they'll only do it if they are hungry and they sense that prey is nearby. Moreover, this ascaroside-induced response is conserved in three other closely related species. But, the researchers say, each of the four fungal species responded to different sets of ascarosides.

"This fits with the idea that different types of predators might encounter different types of prey in nature, and also raises the possibility that fungi could 'read' the different dialects of each worm type," says Sternberg. "What's cool is that we've shown the ability for a predator to eavesdrop on essential prey communication. The worms have to talk to each other using these chemicals, and the predator is listening in on it -- that's how it knows the worms are there."

Sternberg and Hsueh also tested a second type of fungus that uses a constricting ring to trap the worms, but it did not respond to the ascarosides. However, the team says that because they only tested a handful of the chemical cues, it's possible that they simply did not test the right ones for that type of fungus.

"Next, the focus is to really study the molecular mechanism in the fungi -- how does a fungus sense the ascarosides, and what are the downstream pathways that induce the trap formation," says Hsueh. "We are also interested in evolutionary question of why we see this ascaroside sensing in some types of fungi but not others."

In the long run, their findings may help improve methods for pest management. Some of these fungi are used for biocontrol to try and keep nematodes away from certain plant roots. Knowing more about what stimulates the organisms to make traps might allow for the development of better biocontrol preparations, says Sternberg.

The full results of Sternberg and Hsueh's study can be found in the paper, "Nematode-trapping fungi eavesdrop on nematode pheromones," published in the journal Current Biology.

Israeli foreign minister quits after fraud indictment

Avigdor Lieberman stepped down Friday as foreign minister of Israel after he was charged with fraud and breach of trust.

By Reuters

JERUSALEM -- Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Friday he was resigning after being charged with fraud and breach of trust, in a move that could have repercussions on the upcoming general election.

"Though I know I committed no crime ... I have decided to resign my post as foreign minister and deputy prime minister," Lieberman said in a statement emailed to news organizations.

He added that he hoped to clear his name "without delay."

Israel's Justice Ministry said Thursday it would charge Lieberman over alleged irregularities tied to the promotion of an Israeli diplomat who had leaked him privileged information about a police probe into his activities.

Other charges dropped
More serious allegations, including money-laundering and bribery, were dropped, but even the lesser charges cast a cloud over his political future.

Within 24 hours of receiving the ministry report, Lieberman decided to stand down.

Journalists: Israel troops punched us, made us strip

It was unclear if he would still run in the Jan. 22 general election, although Israeli newspapers have suggested he might be forced to sit on the sidelines as the judicial case moves ahead.

Lieberman's right-wing party Yisrael Beiteinu (Our Home is Israel) and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud group have formed an electoral pact ahead of the ballot and opinion polls had predicted they would win.

Israel vows to withhold $400 million from Palestinians

Nationalistic rhetoric
An outspoken foreign minister and a powerful partner in the governing coalition, Lieberman is known for his nationalistic rhetoric, making it a key component of his election campaigning.

Without the Moldovan-born politician near the top of the bill, some pollsters have speculated that the combined group will see a slippage in support.

6 Guys You're Probably Not Going to End Up With - Huffington Post

To state the obvious, there are a lot of guys out there. Many of them are wonderful and will treat you well -- and many just won't. I have heard people say that there are signs right at the beginning of a relationship that can indicate whether or not it will last. Well, here are some of the signs I, or people I know, have seen and flat out ignored, only to have our hearts broken months (or even years) later. If you're the romantic type or looking for something a little more serious these days, then this list is for you.

1. The one who didn't celebrate your birthday with you.

Whether you had a small get-together at a bar with a few of your friends or you sat at home watching '80s movies, the guy you're dating should have been there. Unless you're long-distance, you neglected to invite him or your boyfriend is out of town, there are very few excuses that will fly if this happens. If someone really likes you, he wouldn't want you to celebrate a holiday without him. Whether it's your birthday, an anniversary or Valentine's Day, he should want to be there with you. It's true that some people don't make a big deal over holidays, but if you do, the guy in your life should try to make it extra special for you -- not give you a case of the Molly Ringwald's.

2. The one who says, "We can't be together, right now."

You've been there, I've been there, our grandmothers had probably been there. You meet a guy who seems amazing. You can't believe how much the two of you have in common, how comfortable and natural it feels to be around this person. You probably never or hardly ever fight because it doesn't feel like there's something to argue about. After a while of dating, right around the time where you decide you could really see a future with this guy, he drops the bomb on you. He says something along the lines of, "I am still getting over my ex." Or maybe he's focusing on his job or education and he asks you to just be patient. Well, a few more months go by and you begin to feel like nothing more than a glorified booty call. Sure, you never fight, but it's probably because he never opens up enough for you to see a side of him that would upset you. You get fed up and finally tell him it's time the two of you went your separate ways, and he maturely understands. A month or two goes by, and out of the blue he's calling asking you to hang out. The cycle begins again.

3. The one who is insanely jealous.

Scenari: You bought a new dress for your first girl's night out in weeks, and suffice it to say, it shows more than a little d?colletage. If your boyfriend's first reaction is to politely ask you not to wear that dress, or maybe add a cardigan because it makes him feel uncomfortable, then that's one thing. But if he yells and makes you feel bad about yourself for it, he's probably not the one. Especially if he starts to call you names and accuses you of cheating. It's important to know the difference between the two. While you can argue that no one should ever tell you what to do, if the guy in your life genuinely feels uncomfortable, you should at least take the time to hear him out. But if he's ordering you around and makes you feel scared or threatened, it's time to kick him to the curb.

4. The one who never takes you out on a real date.

It's not about the money, you would be happy with a simple walk in the park. Anything to just breathe some fresh air! This is the guy who always invites you over to his place to "hang out." The guy who doesn't make an effort to come over to your place to see you or pick you up for a date or even takes you to the movies. Not even one he wants to see. The two of you spend all of your time at his place, and you start to deliberately save text messages from him just to prove to your friends that you didn't make him up.

5.The one who's significantly older than you and refuses to spend time with your friends or family, but has the same taste in music as you and would be a really great boyfriend is he'd just stop drinking, finish college and go on that job interview his Uncle set him up with six months ago.

I don't think I need to explain this one.

6. The one who is a jerk to everyone, except you.

Okay, I should clarify. I feel this only applies if you have just started dating the person, not if you are already in a relationship. You know who I mean, right? He's the guy you've just met who everybody tells you is bad news. The one who doesn't seem to have any close friendships, has countless exes and is constantly putting people down. Everyone except you, that is.

This can make you feel special or even feel like you have a bond with the person, but in some cases the guy will drop you after he gets bored with the nice guy routine and find a new girl to prey on. Then you will end up joining the crew of people saying what a jerk he is.

Beyond John Kerry: The Secretary of State Candidates Now That Rice Is Out

So, it's official: Ambassador Susan Rice will not?be Secretary of State ? she's withdrawn and President Obama has accepted, and John McCain is twisting his face in pleasure somewhere. Which means... John Kerry, right? Well, yes, probably ? all the conservatives just love him now. But speculation also puts some other options in front of the president between now and whenever Hillary Clinton steps down ? including, but not limited to, her husband.

RELATED: Susan Rice Edges One Step Closer to Getting Hillary Clinton's Job

The Long Shot

Name: Richard Berman

RELATED: John Kerry Wants Hillary Clinton's Job

Credentials: 15 terms in Congress; served on important security committees; reputation for being discreet.?

RELATED: Huntsman: The Candidate Who Couldn't

Source of Speculation: A bunch of people talking about it to reporters. But not in a "we hear that Obama's thinking..." kind of way. Berman just lost re-election after his district in California was re-zoned, and the guy who beat him said he thought he might be good for the job???and so it went from there.?

RELATED: Why You Shouldn't Trust Gadget Rumors

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Slim. Berman doesn't even have the kind of national profile necessary for such an international job, and no White House officials are leaking his name. It's all good-will consolation prize quotes from his teammates after he just lost his job.?

RELATED: John Kerry, Organic Food, and the Hair of Dorian Gray

The Really?Long Shot

Name: Bill Clinton

Credentials: Served two terms as President; former Gov. of Arkansas; is insanely popular; Obama owes him a favor for helping to save his campaign with his legendary, mostly-improvised convention speech.?

Source of Speculation: Joe Nocera thinks it's a good idea, and a New York Post report from June said Clinton might be angling for the Secretary of State job under a potential Ander Cuomo Presidency if Hillary does decide not to run in 2016. "I think everyone who knows Bill Clinton knows he'd love to be secretary of state because he's so smart and because he knows so much about the world," an 'insider' told the Post.

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Dream on.

The Fool-Me-Twice Shot

Name: Jon Huntsman

Credentials: Former Utah Gov, former Ambassador to China and Singapore, former Republican presidential candidate.?

Source of Speculation: An Associated Press report?that said "officials" were looking at him for the job.?

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Slim, for different reasons. Namely that he'd probably never accept the appointment. Huntsman was the Republican Obama's team was most scared of?in the last election, and the President named him his Ambassador to China, so it's clear Obama thinks highly of him. But Huntsman has dreams of potentially running for the Big Job again, potentially against Hillary in 2016, and this would make it pretty hard ? if not impossible ? to get Republican support for that.?

The Safe Bet

Name: William Burns

Credentials: Current Deputy Secretary of State.

Source of Speculation: The same report that named Huntsman as a candidate.?

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Good, if not great. He's Hillary's current number two, and he's getting good buzz with "insiders," apparently. The report that floated his name left things a bit unspectacular, though. Burns, "is a career diplomat who has no political baggage and would be unlikely to stir significant opposition among lawmakers." So, basically, he's an unsexy pick that wouldn't garner any headlines.?

The Safest Bet

Name: John Kerry

Credentials: He's getting it.?

Source of Speculation: He's getting it.

Likelihood of Actually Getting It: Guys, it's going to be Kerry. Just stop.?

Indian sitar virtuouso Ravi Shankar dies at 92

Ravi Shankar, the sitar virtuoso who became a hippie musical icon of the 1960s after hobnobbing with the Beatles and who introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences over an eight-decade career, has died. He was 92.

The prime minister's office confirmed his death and called him a "national treasure."

Labeled "the godfather of world music" by George Harrison, Shankar helped millions of classical, jazz and rock lovers discover the centuries-old traditions of Indian music.

He also pioneered the concept of the rock benefit with the 1971 Concert For Bangladesh. To later generations, he was known as the estranged father of popular American singer Norah Jones.

As early as the 1950s, Shankar began collaborating with and teaching some of the greats of Western music, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. He played well-received shows in concert halls in Europe and the United States, but faced a constant struggle to bridge the musical gap between the West and the East.

Describing an early Shankar tour in 1957, Time magazine said "U.S. audiences were receptive but occasionally puzzled."

His close relationship with Harrison, the Beatles lead guitarist, shot Shankar to global stardom in the 1960s.

Harrison had grown fascinated with the sitar, a long necked, string instrument that uses a bulbous gourd for its resonating chamber and resembles a giant lute. He played the instrument, with a Western tuning, on the song "Norwegian Wood," but soon sought out Shankar, already a musical icon in India, to teach him to play it properly.

The pair spent weeks together, starting the lessons at Harrison's house in England and then moving to a houseboat in Kashmir and later to California.

Gaining confidence with the complex instrument, Harrison recorded the Indian-inspired song "Within You Without You" on the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," helping spark the raga-rock phase of 60s music and drawing increasing attention to Shankar and his work.

Shankar's popularity exploded, and he soon found himself playing on bills with some of the top rock musicians of the era. He played a four-hour set at the Monterey Pop Festival and the opening day of Woodstock.

Though the audience for his music had hugely expanded, Shankar, a serious, disciplined traditionalist who had played Carnegie Hall, chafed against the drug use and rebelliousness of the hippie culture.

"I was shocked to see people dressing so flamboyantly. They were all stoned. To me, it was a new world," Shankar told Rolling Stone of the Monterey festival.

While he enjoyed Otis Redding and the Mamas and the Papas at the festival, he was horrified when Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire.

"That was too much for me. In our culture, we have such respect for musical instruments, they are like part of God," he said.

In 1971, moved by the plight of millions of refugees fleeing into India to escape the war in Bangladesh, Shankar reached out to Harrison to see what they could do to help.

In what Shankar later described as "one of the most moving and intense musical experiences of the century," the pair organized two benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden that included Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr.

The concert, which spawned an album and a film, raised millions of dollars for UNICEF and inspired other rock benefits, including the 1985 Live Aid concert to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia and the 2010 Hope For Haiti Now telethon.

Ravindra Shankar Chowdhury was born April 7, 1920, in the Indian city of Varanasi.

At the age of 10, he moved to Paris to join the world famous dance troupe of his brother Uday. Over the next eight years, Shankar traveled with the troupe across Europe, America and Asia, and later credited his early immersion in foreign cultures with making him such an effective ambassador for Indian music.

During one tour, renowned musician Baba Allaudin Khan joined the troupe, took Shankar under his wing and eventually became his teacher through 7 1/2 years of isolated, rigorous study of the sitar.

"Khan told me you have to leave everything else and do one thing properly," Shankar told The Associated Press.

In the 1950s, Shankar began gaining fame throughout India. He held the influential position of music director for All India Radio in New Delhi and wrote the scores for several popular films. He began writing compositions for orchestras, blending clarinets and other foreign instruments into traditional Indian music.

And he became a de facto tutor for Westerners fascinated by India's musical traditions.

He gave lessons to Coltrane, who named his son Ravi in Shankar's honor, and became close friends with Menuhin, recording the acclaimed "West Meets East" album with him. He also collaborated with flutist Jean Pierre Rampal, composer Philip Glass and conductors Andre Previn and Zubin Mehta.

"Any player on any instrument with any ears would be deeply moved by Ravi Shankar. If you love music, it would be impossible not to be," singer David Crosby, whose band The Byrds was inspired by Shankar's music, said in the book "The Dawn of Indian Music in the West: Bhairavi."

Shankar's personal life, however, was more complex.

His 1941 marriage to Baba Allaudin Khan's daughter, Annapurna Devi, ended in divorce. Though he had a decades-long relationship with dancer Kamala Shastri that ended in 1981, he had relationships with several other women in the 1970s.

In 1979, he fathered Norah Jones with New York concert promoter Sue Jones, and in 1981, Sukanya Rajan, who played the tanpura at his concerts, gave birth to his daughter Anoushka.

He grew estranged from Sue Jones in the 80s and didn't see Norah for a decade, though they later re-established contact.

He married Rajan in 1989 and trained young Anoushka as his heir on the sitar. In recent years, father and daughter toured the world together.

When Jones shot to stardom and won five Grammy awards in 2003, Anoushka Shankar was nominated for a Grammy of her own.

Shankar, himself, has won three Grammy awards and was nominated for an Oscar for his musical score for the movie "Gandhi."

Despite his fame, numerous albums and decades of world tours, Shankar's music remained a riddle to many Western ears.

Shankar was amused after he and colleague Ustad Ali Akbar Khan were greeted with admiring applause when they opened the Concert for Bangladesh by twanging their sitar and sarod for a minute and a half.

"If you like our tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more," he told the confused crowd, and then launched into his set.

How to Ensure You Enjoy Your Next Vacation ... - Travel & Leisure ...

Listen to this Post. Powered by iSpeech.org

We all need vacations from time to time. One mistake many people make when they go on vacation is that they do not properly plan their trip. They don?t consider how much time they have in a day and do not plan things accordingly. You do not want to plan for an exciting adventure when it?s going to take you a few hours just to get there. That is, unless it is something that you are really looking forward to.

This is why we are going to discuss with you a few of the easiest ways you can go about enjoying your next vacation.

Have a Back Up Plan

There are a few ways to go about doing this. First of all, you should pack clothing that is going to ensure you are prepared for any type of weather. Sure, the weatherman may have said it?s going to be sunny all week but you never know. You really don?t want to get caught in a nasty storm and without the proper attire to leave your hotel room. Make sure to at least bring one outfit for each type of weather. This way, you can get out and have fun even if it?s not as nice out as you thought it was going to be. Being stuck in your hotel isn?t exactly how you want to spend your vacation.

Secondly, you should prepare for other changes such as events. What are you going to do if an event you had planned gets cancelled? Always have back up plans in place and other things you want to do or see. This way, you aren?t scrambling at the last minute to find something to do. If there are things you need to book in advance, make sure you do that so that you don?t come up empty handed while at your destination.

You should also come up with things you can do in your hotel if you happen to get sick or just feel like taking some time to relax.

Try Something New

One thing we think everyone should do when they are out of their comfort zone already is to push the limit a little further. One of the best ways to explore a new location is to try a food item you have never tried before. This will definitely be something you are never going to forget. Even if you have to go to a fancy restaurant to try the thing you are interested in; give yourself the luxury and a bit of wiggle room. You work very hard for your money and at the end of the day; if you?re not enjoying your life, what?s the point, right?

Even if you can only afford to do it one night, go to a place you have been dying to check out. Enjoy the scenery and get lost in the vibe. It?s not like you are going to be here often, so take your time and take it all in.

Sara Jenkins is an avid blogger. She is a home maker and a loving mother of two. She loves writing about things that affects her family. She really loved the holiday she took with her family in the bright holiday rentals on Delany Avenue.
